BCEHL INTRODUCES ANNUAL CAMPAIGN TO RAISE AWARENESS

For Immediate Release
October 29, 2021

Saanichton, B.C. –  The British Columbia Elite Hockey League (BCEHL) is pleased to announce a new league initiative to help raise awareness around an important social issue or situation impacting B.C. and Yukon each hockey season.

The annual campaign will run the length of the hockey season with all 35 BCEHL teams supporting the selected cause, committing to raising awareness, and will include having all players wear a sticker on their helmet in support of the campaign. Each season the BCEHL will select a new campaign to support.

“BCEHL teams play in arenas all over BC and aiming to raise awareness about an important topic is something that we can use our reach to do,” BC Hockey Chief Executive Officer Cameron Hope said. “For the 2021-22 season the BCEHL has chosen to encourage support for Indigenous Residential School Reconciliation, and to help create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts from the Residential Schools.”

Every BCEHL player will have an orange shirt sticker placed on their helmet. The symbolism of the orange shirt has been recognized nationally on September 30th and became known as Orange Shirt Day. This year, Orange Shirt Day was officially established by the Federal Government as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The BCEHL felt that we could show support for this cause by asking all players to wear an orange shirt helmet sticker, as a season-long reminder of these important Orange Shirt Society goals,” BCEHL Commissioner Fred Zweep said. “We hope that by doing so we can add to the conversation and encourage education on these issues.”

The genesis of the Orange Shirt Day is due to the events that occurred at St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School in Williams Lake, B.C. To learn more about this we encourage everyone to visit www.orangeshirtday.org.
