BCEHL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH - FEBRUARY 2023

For Immediate Release

March 9, 2023

Saanichton, B.C. – Each month during the season, the British Columbia Elite Hockey League (BCEHL) honours one player from each of the four leagues as the BCEHL Player of the Month for their respective league. Every team has the opportunity to nominate an individual from their team to be considered for the monthly award. This award is not based strictly on statistics. Team staff factors in the player’s on-and-off ice contributions towards the team as well as their involvement within the community and minor hockey mentorship.

Here are your Players of the Month for February!

Female U18 AAA

#30 Chelsea West

Thompson-Okanagan Lakers
MHA: Salmon Arm
Goaltender
2W-2SO

Chelsea West's performance in goal for the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, along with her impact off the ice, makes her a deserving recipient of the Female U18 Player of the Month. West volunteers her time at a local elementary school, helping run gym classes, and is a promotor of health, mentoring women at the gym. Lakers' head coach Ed Patterson says that West motivates her team to bring their best each day by her positivity, hard work and determination.

On the ice, West picked up a pair of shutout victories in February, which helped the Lakers achieve a record of 4-2-0-0 during the month. West also recently committed to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and will suit up for their Women's Hockey team next season.

U18 AAA

#10 Erik Pastro

Okanagan Rockets
MHA: Vernon
Forward
10G-7A

Okanagan Rockets' forward Erik Pastro is February's Player of the Month in the U18 league. Both on-and-off the ice, Pastro's leadership skills have become more impressive as the season has progressed, according to Rockets' head coach Eric Blais.

Pastro enjoyed a very successful month on the ice, as he posted 17 points (10g-7a) in only six games. Pastro's strong finish to the season led him to the top of the scoring leaderboard in the U18 league with 67 points (32g-35a) in 32 games.

U17 AAA

#79 Ben Wetterberg

South Island Royals
MHA: Victoria Racquet Club
Forward
2G-3A

A combination of on-ice success and community involvement led South Island Royals' forward Ben Wetterberg to be named the U17 league's Player of the Month for February. In the community, Wetterberg participates in his team's Player Mentorship Program and helps out on the ice with younger divisions during their practices. Wetterberg also spends his time volunteering at a local senior home.

In six BCEHL games in the month of February, Wetterberg found the back of the net twice, to go along with three assists. Wetterberg finished the regular season with 28 points (12g-16a) in 36 games.

U15 AAA

#19 Gavin Wood

Okanagan Rockets
MHA: Kelowna
Forward
9G-10A

Gavin Wood's on-ice production and off-ice impact led the Okanagan Rockets' forward to earn U15 Player of the Month honours for the month of February. Wood has been involved in multiple community initiatives away from the rink, that includes fundraising with the Salvation Army, and a local recycling program that donates to people in need. According to Rockets' head coach Max Mowat, Wood leads by example during each practice and game, which brings a positive environment to the team.

Across 10 BCEHL games in February, Wood picked up 19 points (9g-10a). The Kelowna MHA product finished third in U15 scoring during the regular season, with 43 points (21g-22a).
